From a young age, James was extremely competitive. Starting as young as 5, James’ first endeavour into the sporting field was little athletics. From there, he found a love for Rugby Union, travelling interstate at 16 to compete in a high level and to ultimately work towards his goal of playing for Australia. To assist him with this, James found CrossFit.

Over time, his accessory work in CrossFit took over and he found himself in the gym working new skills and trying to improve his benchmark scores more than he was on the rugby field. In 2012, James tried his luck at the CrossFit Open, placing 47th and earning himself a spot at the Australian CrossFit Regional Competition. Going in with no expectations and coming out with a 9th place, the hunger for CrossFit success began.

In 2013, James set up his affiliate, CrossFit Mode to help support his dreams of making the CrossFit Games. After placing 11th in 2013, 4th in 2014, 13th in 2015 – James finally made the CrossFit Games placing 2nd at regionals in 2016. in 2017, 2018 and 2019 he has placed 1st at the Regional/Sanctional events, earning him 4 consecutive years at the CrossFit Games. He has placed 26th, 27th and 17th respectively, and this season took out his best placing yet of 5th at the World CrossFit Games, earning himself the title of the 5th Fittest Man on Earth. 

Ellie Salthouse is a professional triathlete from Brisbane, Australia. She shares her time living between Brisbane and her USA training base in Boulder, Colorado.

Ellie has been racing professionally for 10 years and has multiple titles to her name, including; 2 x Youth Olympic Games silver medals, multiple Australian titles, 3 x Challenge half distance titles, 8 x Ironman 70.3 titles and two top 10 finishes at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships.

Ellie’s ultimate dream is to become Ironman 70.3 World Champion. 

Ellie’s partnership with Ultra Athlete gives her a platform to share her extensive knowledge in triathlon and triathlon programming with others, in order to help them achieve their goals, regardless of their size.


What makes us unique in our field, is our heavy focus on structured ‘working in’ practises, also known as good-old-fashioned recovery. We believe the addition of this is what makes a more balanced athlete who remains less injured, has increased longevity in their chosen sport, and builds a better mental game.

Choose Your Program

Choose the combination that works best for you.

There is no right or wrong way to use our programs. Some of our athletes subscribe to a single program, while others subscribe to a handful to give them variety on a daily basis. HIIT FIT is the gold standard in high-intensity interval training (HIIT). You can expect to be hi(i)t with AMRAPs, EMOMs, tabatas and more. If there’s one thing we can guarantee in addition to sweating, you won’t get bored. This program includes four prescribed sessions a week with a rest/recovery day and an optional “Choose your own adventure” workout, which you can slot in anywhere during your week, depending on how your body feels.

Functional Fit


Functional Fit is a gateway to improving your functional fitness. This program paves the way for you to learn and refine technical skills and movements such as muscle-ups, handstand walks and Olympic lifts, while improving overall fitness and helping you achieve better results at local competitions. You can expect to be pushed... but not to your breaking point. If you’re looking for a new challenge and aspire to climb the ranks at your local box, this program is for you.

Functional Fit Pro


Functional Fit Pro is designed for the experienced athlete who can commit 3-4 hours to daily training, plus recovery 5-6 days a week and is competent with highly technical movements, including gymnastics and Olympic lifts. Pro Athletes will follow James Newbury’s training stratagem, with the aim of getting you to the podium.

On this program, you’ll learn to tap into your elite performance mindset. You can expect to enhance your range of skills, fine tune your existing skill set and hone in on your capacity across the ten modalities of fitness.

Ultra Gymnastics is designed to develop all levels of gymnastics capabilities and capacity. From building blocks to final tweaks, whether you struggle to link pull-ups, get your toes to the bar or walk on your hands, this program is dedicated to refining some of the most technical movements. Ultra Gymnastics programs for three sessions per week varying from 20-30 minutes.

A strong core is fundamental to carrying out many other movements well. Ultra’s targeted Core training program will strengthen your centre and set you up to perform at your best in any one of our other training streams. Ultra Core is designed to give you the best of both worlds; functional ability and enviable aesthetics! Working In


Humans have an “optimal stress zone”. Too little stress won’t illicit any results; and too much can lead to chronic inflammation, and then to chronic fatigue and, subsequently, adrenal fatigue. In addition to this, we need to account for the day-to-day stress caused by things like training, work, study and food… Ultra Athletes manage this by “working in”; it’s the conscious practise of energy giving to counterbalance the taking. Activities to support this practice include breath work, sauna, passive stretching, yoga, massage, cold therapy, meditation and floatation therapy.

Ultra’s programming offers a finely tuned approach that works to balance training stress through working in, and in a way that can be practised on a daily basis. This promotes better sleep, increased energy, greater arousal towards training, faster recovery and lower risk of injury. Working in also supports immune function, an important consideration in the lead up to competitions, when the likelihood of illness can increase.
